1) The literature of the puritan age showed a general character of austerity, an increase in introspection and self-criticism, a growing emphasis on realism and more acute analysis of human moods and experiences; poetry, however, was not characterized by homogeneity of expression.
2) The ‘Cavalier Poets’ were a number of authors who supported Charles I during the Civil War.
3) They were from the upper-class, whose ideals were personal elegance and courteous behavior. They wrote about women, wine and song.
4) They declared themselves admires of Ben Johnson, who deeply influenced their poetry; considerable was also the influence of Latin poet such as Horace and Catullus, who promoted the enjoyment of life’s fleeting beauty.
5) Some remarkable, and often forgotten, poets of the Puritan age are: Robert Herrick, Edmund Waller, Sir John Suckling, Richard Crashaw, Richard Lovelace and George Herbert (who wrote mainly religious poems).
6) The Civil War affected the development of prose during the puritan period. Puritan mistrusted fiction: therefore prose grew less artificial, its subjects were familiar and its tone generally thoughtful.

Other information about the Chapter:

JOHN DONNE : Main representative of the metaphysical poetry
GEORGE HERBERT: Wrote devotional religious poems
JOHN MILTON: embodies both the humanist and the puritan character, and his poetry shows contemporary influences. He also wrote essays in defense of civil liberty.
ANDREW MARVEL: the last great poet of the Century, although neglected in his lifetime.

Ecco qui. Il riassunto è dato dalla fusione delle varie risposte, più l'aggiunta opzionale delle informazioni aggiuntive su alcuni autori che ho allegato di sopra.
Buon Studio.
